In brief
Typhoon Danas has made history as it struck Taiwan’s west coast, leading to two fatalities and over 300 injuries, alongside extensive power disruptions affecting nearly 400,000 households.
Typhoon Danas made landfall late Sunday night in Chiayi County, causing extensive damage along Taiwan's southwestern coast. As of Monday afternoon, the powerful storm had transitioned into a tropical storm and was moving offshore toward mainland China, leaving a devastating impact in its wake. The Taiwan Central Weather Administration reported that this was the first time a typhoon hit Chiayi County since record-keeping began in 1958. The typhoon had the intensity of a Category 1 hurricane, with winds and rain affecting the entire island. President Lai Ching-te noted the unusual path of Danas, which typically favors Taiwan's eastern rugged terrain. The storm has caused significant disruptions, with schools and businesses forced to close to ensure the safety of residents. Tragically, two confirmed deaths occurred in Tainan, the former capital of Taiwan. In one incident, a 60-year-old man succumbed when a power outage disabled his medical breathing apparatus, while a 69-year-old man was killed when a tree fell onto his residence. Although significant injuries were reported, further details about the individuals affected remained undisclosed by the government. Authorities continue to manage the aftermath of Typhoon Danas, working to restore electricity and assess the broader impacts on infrastructure and local communities. Emergency services are mobilized to assist those affected, reflecting the ongoing resilience of Taiwanese society in the face of natural disasters.
