In brief

Officials warn that the survival chances are diminishing as rescue operations struggle against the debris-filled tunnel.

In a grave situation that has captured national attention, rescue operations are underway for eight workers believed to be trapped in a collapsed tunnel in Telangana, India. The tunnel, part of the extensive Srisailam Left Bank Canal project aimed at creating one of the longest irrigation systems globally, collapsed after an inflow of silt and water, leading to a caved-in roof. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when water and debris rushed into the tunnel, approximately nine miles deep, leaving the workers stranded behind a large tunnel-boring machine that obstructed their escape route. Some workers managed to flee, but the remaining eight have been unresponsive since the disaster, raising fears about their condition.Manoj Gaur, the chairman of Jaiprakash Associates—a key player in the construction of the project—described the perilous situation, noting, “Imagine most of that height being filled with water, stone, and mud.” As rescue teams, including the Indian Army and elite Marine Commandos, mobilize their resources, they face significant challenges due to an accumulation of debris that reportedly reaches six to seven feet in some areas.Jupally Krishna Rao, a state minister closely involved in the rescue operations, conveyed the dire prospects, stating, “I can’t predict the chances of survival, but the chances are not very good.” Nevertheless, he affirmed that rescuers would persist as long as there remained any hope of finding the workers alive. The Srisailam project, which began in 2005, has been fraught with delays and controversies, particularly from environmental activists who have warned about its potential to destabilize local terrain. Experts have suggested that the ongoing construction may have contributed to the conditions that precipitated this recent calamity.Rescue teams continue their valiant efforts in hopes of reaching the trapped workers, while the community and families await anxious news amidst a growing sense of despair.
