Faye Hall, an American woman detained by the Taliban alongside a British couple, has made a desperate plea for their release, describing them as 'literally dying' in prison. Hall, who was arrested with Peter, 80, and Barbie Reynolds, 76, was released after two months of imprisonment, but the couple remains behind bars without clear reason for their detention.
During an emotional interview with BBC Breakfast, Hall expressed her deep concern over the Reynolds' deteriorating health. She revealed that Barbie has lost significant weight and is unable to walk, while Peter, who requires daily medication following heart surgery and cancer treatment, has also been experiencing worsening health conditions.
'We just have these elderly people, they're literally dying, and time is running out,' Hall emphasized, urging the international community to intervene. She described their conditions, highlighting cramped cells and threats from armed guards, which exacerbated the stress and mental health strain on the detainees.
The British couple, married in Kabul in 1970, had lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades and had established a charity endorsed by the Taliban in 2021. Their abrupt arrest on February 1 has raised humanitarian and legal concerns, especially as the Foreign Office continues to support their family amidst the ongoing diplomatic challenges in Afghanistan.
Hall's heartfelt message was to keep hoping, urging the couple to 'never give up.' The UN has previously warned that without immediate medical assistance, Peter and Barbie could perish from the inhumane conditions of their imprisonment.
Both the UK and US government officials have condemned the Taliban's actions, urging the need for the couple's immediate release and restoration of their human rights.
