In brief
American Airlines encountered a brief nationwide halt on flights due to a technical issue affecting its systems. The disruption lasted about an hour, with delays still affecting some flights as the airline worked to resolve the situation during a peak travel time.
American Airlines has announced the resumption of its flights after a technical problem caused a temporary nationwide halt that lasted for approximately one hour on Tuesday. The situation arose during one of the busiest travel days of the year—Christmas Eve—prompting concerns for many holiday travelers. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the flights resumed shortly before 13:00 GMT. The airline attributed the disruption to a “vendor technology issue,” assuring passengers that the entire team was mobilized to minimize the inconvenience. “We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience,” the airline stated. “It's all hands on deck as our team is working diligently to get customers where they need to go as quickly as possible.”Despite the flights resuming, departure boards at key U.S. airports continued to reflect delays of up to two hours for certain flights as the airline recuperated from the issue. Real-time tracking service Flightradar24, however, indicated that planes began taking off from major travel hubs, with most operations returning to normal.Passengers shared their experiences on social media, revealing that some were stranded on the tarmac or at the gates as flights were impacted by the outage. In a notable incident, a gate agent in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, informed passengers that the system was gradually coming back online, as they prepared for boarding a flight to Philadelphia. This incident isn’t the first for American Airlines; the airline previously faced similar challenges in July, when a global IT crash grounded flights across the U.S. due to communication issues linked to a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike—a disruption that also affected various banks and emergency services.
