In brief

Despite a commitment to restructuring, Volkswagen anticipates only a slight recovery in profits due to prevailing geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties.

Volkswagen, Europe’s largest carmaker, has reported a notable decline in earnings over the past year as it grapples with significant restructuring efforts and pressing competition from rivals in China. The company’s challenges are compounded by shifting trade policies in the United States and tariff uncertainties, particularly following heightened tensions in global markets instigated by previous U.S. administrations. In a recent statement, Volkswagen’s management revealed that revenue remained stagnant while operating profit experienced a striking 15 percent decrease in 2024. Arno Antlitz, Volkswagen’s CFO, attributed this downturn to escalating fixed costs related to the ongoing restructuring and production adjustments. For the current year, the company projects an operating profit margin of 5.5 to 6.5 percent, only slightly higher than last year's reported margin of 5.9 percent. The restructuring expenses have included costs approaching $1 billion associated with a severance program aimed at the administrative sector of the Volkswagen brand. Furthermore, a recent agreement with the IG Metall union outlines plans to reduce the workforce by 35,000 positions through retirement and natural attrition, without implementing immediate factory closures in Germany. As the automotive industry undergoes significant transformative changes, Volkswagen’s leadership remains vigilant. CEO Oliver Blume expressed a desire for a clearer tariff roadmap from U.S. authorities before further discussions with the Biden administration. The ongoing political and economic uncertainties continue to influence the company’s strategies as it seeks to maintain its competitive edge amidst a dynamic automotive landscape.
