SANTA ROSA, Calif. — Zoe Rosenberg, a 23-year-old animal rights activist, is currently on trial for rescuing four chickens—Poppy, Ivy, Aster, and Azalea—from a Perdue Farms supplier in Petaluma. She is facing serious charges, including felony conspiracy and several misdemeanor counts. Her defense argues that her actions were driven by compassion and were intended to save the animals from abuse.
Rosenberg testified that she disguised herself as a staff member at Petaluma Poultry, claiming she was motivated by a genuine concern for the well-being of the chickens, many of whom appeared to be severely distressed. In an interview, she stated, My intent was to help animals and to do so legally, not to break the law. During the trial, supporters wore orange poppies in tribute to the rescued bird.
Legal Proceedings and Activism
The prosecution contends that Rosenberg’s actions were not mere rescue efforts but rather a calculated publicity stunt aimed at promoting Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), a Berkeley-based animal rights group. They pointed out that Rosenberg’s prior acts of activism, including a protest at an NBA game, align with their claims of her desire for public attention.
Defense attorney Chris Carraway argued that Rosenberg's deep belief that the chickens were suffering fueled her actions. He urged the jury to understand that this case is about intent rather than simply identifying her as the one who took the birds.
In Sonoma County, where agriculture is a key industry, legal actions against activists have been stringent. Rosenberg’s case reflects a broader struggle between agricultural interests and animal rights advocacy. A similar case was successfully prosecuted against another DxE member in 2021. Rosenberg, facing the potential for a lengthy prison sentence, has expressed that more resources should focus on stopping animal cruelty rather than prosecuting her actions.
The trial continues, accentuating the clash between animal welfare advocates and those who prioritize agricultural practices.
