WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Park Police officer, who had been shot in an ambush, successfully left the hospital on Tuesday, according to the Park Police's updates on its X account. The officer was attacked while driving an unmarked vehicle in a neighborhood close to Washington’s border with Maryland on Monday evening. Park Police Chief Scott Brecht shared in a press briefing that the officer was pursuing an investigation at the time when gunmen opened fire on him. Details regarding the nature of the investigation were not disclosed by the chief. According to a law enforcement official, who spoke under anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case, the officer suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The investigation is a joint effort between the Park Police and Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department, who are still on the lookout for the two suspects involved. Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll emphasized that the officer appeared to be intentionally targeted, and there’s a possibility that the attackers recognized him as a law enforcement officer. Federal authorities are also providing assistance as the investigation unfolds.
