The world must defeat climate denialism and fight fake news, Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has declared during the opening meeting of COP30, the UN climate talks being held in Belém, Brazil.

Lula, in a rallying cry to the delegates, made indirect references to former President Donald Trump, who previously dismissed climate change as a scam. The two-week conference commenced in the lush city of Belém, on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with representatives from various nations attending amidst a politically fraught atmosphere.

Thousands of delegates arrived at a makeshift venue housed within a former aerodrome, with accommodations ranging from shipping containers to cruise ships along the riverside. Leaders from the Guajajara indigenous group welcomed attendees with a traditional cultural performance. President Lula emphasized that this conference should be known as the COP of truth in an age dominated by misinformation and rejection of scientific evidence. He insisted that proponents of climate denial need to be confronted decisively.

Lula's comments express a broader agenda for COP30, which aims to address essential commitments made to transition away from fossil fuels, secure financing for vulnerable communities, and safeguard natural ecosystems. Central to this strategy is the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), a proposed fund leveraging $125 billion to protect tropical forests globally.

As the conference opened, UK climate envoy Rachel Kyte expressed optimism regarding the TFFF, declaring it a brilliant initiative deserving of support, even as initial fundraising efforts have been sluggish.

In addition to addressing climate action, discussions will also revolve around maintaining the global temperature rise within the limits established by Paris Agreement goals. However, notable absences, particularly those from U.S. officials, have raised concerns about the impact of such voids in dialogue as the world strives for collective climate solutions.

Notably, Lula pointed to the detrimental consequences of misinformation, stating, they control the algorithms, sow hatred and spread fear, urging a unified response against deniers. With increasing urgency as climate-related disasters escalate globally, COP30 represents a pivotal opportunity for nations to recommit to environmental stewardship and collective progress.
