Rep. Eric Swalwell, a prominent Democrat and former House manager during Trump’s impeachment trial in 2021, has officially entered the race for California governor. His announcement, made on ABC’s 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!', underscored his commitment to elevating the lives of Californians amidst ongoing challenges.
Swalwell expressed the urgency for a 'fighter and protector' to lead the state, emphasizing the importance of lowering costs and boosting wages for its residents. Drawing from his past experiences, he articulated a vision for a California that stands firm against external pressures, specifically challenging Trump’s policies and the climate they create.
'Our state is under attack,' Swalwell stated via his campaign website, critiquing Trump's tactics of militarizing cities and undermining vital research and climate initiatives. He signaled a readiness to take this fight home, suggesting a return to focusing on California's strengths and priorities.
This candidacy comes amid a dynamic political landscape, with Swalwell joining a crowded field of candidates, including billionaire activist Tom Steyer, Rep. Katie Porter, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. More than a dozen Democrats and Republicans are gearing up for the all-party primary set for June.
Swalwell has a history in California politics; he has represented a northern district since 2012 and previously ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries. His entry into the gubernatorial race marks a significant shift as he aims to transition from national politics back to state leadership.
With the stakes high and numerous candidates in the running, the upcoming election promises to be a pivotal moment for California's future.
