Egypt authorities have detained several individuals who claimed to be judges and used staged court videos on social media to defraud citizens.
The Ministry of Interior reported that the suspects, an unemployed man from Cairo and a student from Giza, admitted to forming a criminal gang that promised residents government‑backed housing in exchange for money.
Policemen arrested the main suspect after a complaint that he had misappropriated funds while posing as a judge. While in custody, investigators seized a pistol, a forged judicial sash, and identity cards that bore fake judicial titles.
The suspect also confessed to filming and disseminating videos inside a courthouse while wearing the sash to give the ruse credence. A second suspect admitted to publishing these videos online and claiming a judicial role, with support from court officials.
In addition to the two primary defendants, court employees who assisted the plots were arrested and questioned. Their testimonies suggested that the suspects had claimed employment with one of Egypt’s judicial authorities to gain access to court premises.
The criminal case is now moving into an expedited trial through state‑owned media channels, and the Ministry of Interior will continue to monitor similar fraud schemes to protect citizens from misinformation and abuse.
