Israel has carried out an air strike on the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, for the first time in months, targeting a senior member of the militant group Hezbollah, despite a ceasefire.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the target was Hezbollah's chief of staff, identified by Israeli media as Ali Tabtai, marking him as the group's second-in-command.
Lebanon's health ministry reported at least five fatalities and 28 injuries due to the strike, which hit a residential apartment block in the congested Dahieh district. It remains unclear whether Tabtai was among those killed.
Hezbollah confirmed that the strike was aimed at a senior commander, although no identity was disclosed.
This act of aggression comes amid an ongoing Israeli campaign against entities affiliated with Hezbollah, a Shia Muslim group backed by Iran. This escalation takes place despite a ceasefire mediated by the U.S. and France that was implemented the previous November.
Israeli officials allege that Hezbollah is attempting to enhance its military ability and has been engaged in arms smuggling activities into Lebanon, raising alarms about potential conflict escalation.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called on the international community to pressure Israel to cease its attacks and withdraw from Lebanese territory, highlighting violations of the peace agreement that concluded a prolonged conflict.
Although the Lebanese government has vowed to disarm Hezbollah, the group has outright rejected discussions regarding its arsenal until Israel halts its strikes and fully exits Lebanon.
A Western diplomatic official indicated that the Trump administration is growing impatient with the perceived slow progress against Hezbollah, which many nations, including the U.S. and the U.K., classify as a terrorist organization.
The latest clashes between Israel and Hezbollah reignited after the latter began launching rockets at Israeli positions following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which Hezbollah justified as support for the Palestinian fight in Gaza.
According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli assaults have resulted in around 4,000 deaths within Lebanon, predominantly among civilians, and displaced over 1.2 million residents. In contrast, Israeli reports document more than 80 military and 47 civilian deaths due to hostilities.
The U.S. government placed sanctions on Tabtai in 2016, designating him as a terrorist with a $5 million bounty for information regarding his whereabouts.
