At least 22 Palestinians have been killed in a series of Israeli air strikes across northern and central Gaza, Hamas medical and civil defense officials have reported. The airstrikes targeted five locations, including residential homes, and took the life of a senior Hamas commander.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their actions were in retaliation for an incident earlier in the day when an 'armed terrorist' was said to have fired at soldiers after crossing a designated area of control. However, Hamas refuted these claims.
This outbreak of violence has occurred amidst ongoing accusations from both sides that the terms of a recent ceasefire, established six weeks ago, have been violated. Since the ceasefire came into effect, over 310 Palestinians have been reported killed in Israeli operations, reflecting a harrowing human toll.
The bombardment hit areas such as Gaza City and Deir al-Balah, leading to multiple casualties. Notably, five people were reported killed near the Abbas junction in Gaza City, with witnesses describing a devastating airstrike that set vehicles ablaze. Strikes continued throughout the day, with multiple homes and a mosque targeted.
The Israeli government has claimed that these military responses are necessary to eliminate threats posed by Hamas, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office stating that the actions were a direct result of ongoing ceasefire violations by Hamas.
As tensions escalate, Hamas has urged mediators, including the US, to address what they perceive as a blatant disregard for agreements and a push by Israel to alter the status quo. This tension underscores the fragile and volatile nature of the ongoing conflict, with fears that the cycle of violence may once again spiral out of control.
In light of these developments, many in Gaza have called for urgent international intervention to restore peace and protect civilians suffering the consequences of this conflict.
