LOS ANGELES — A federal judge has dismissed a criminal case against Carlitos Ricardo Parias, a popular TikTok streamer known for documenting police activities, due to violations of his constitutional rights. U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin ruled that Parias' legal team was denied access to him during his immigration detention, hindering his ability to prepare for trial.
The decision comes after Parias was indicted for charges related to an incident in October, where he allegedly rammed his vehicle into an immigration enforcement vehicle. Despite the dismissal being with prejudice, preventing the government from re-filing the same charges, the U.S. Attorney's office is evaluating options for an appeal.
Parias, a Mexican citizen residing in the U.S. illegally, has gained a following with his Spanish-language TikTok accounts, which document not only police actions but also community events and local culture. His reports on immigration enforcement have made him a critical source of information for the South Los Angeles community. This dismissal raises questions about the treatment of individuals in custody and their rights to adequate legal representation.
