In brief

The decision to pursue charges reflects growing concerns about fan behaviors and boundaries in pop culture.

The South Korean police have initiated an investigation into a Japanese woman who kissed Jin, a member of the globally popular K-pop group BTS, during a fan event held in Seoul last June. The incident has raised serious allegations of sexual harassment in a public setting, prompting law enforcement to request the woman, currently in Japan, to come forward for questioning. This encounter occurred at Jin’s first public appearance following his military discharge, where he hosted an event that allowed him to hug 1,000 fans. Instead of a standard hug, the woman surprised everyone by kissing Jin's face, an act that he instinctively responded to by turning away. Her actions ignited outrage among other BTS fans, leading to one filing a criminal complaint that triggered an official investigation by Korean authorities. On June 13, 2024, Jin, whose birth name is Kim Seok-jin, welcomed fans to a three-hour-long "hugathon," where selected fans had the opportunity to embrace him and witness live performances. However, one untimely kiss during this moment caused a viral sensation and backlash online. Reports indicate that Jin appeared startled but continued with his event after the unwanted interaction. The accused wrote on her blog describing the kiss on Jin's neck, noting that "the skin was very soft," which further inflamed the controversy among the fanbase. Despite the privacy surrounding her identity, police have successfully identified her with the help of Japanese law enforcement officials. The BBC has reached out to BTS' agency, HYBE, for comments regarding this incident.Jin is the first member of BTS to complete his military service, followed by J-Hope, who was discharged in October, while the remaining members - V, RM, Jimin, Jungkook, and Suga - continue their service. The group is anticipated to reunite in June 2025. As K-pop idols often engage closely with their fans, utilizing social media and live events, there is an increasing focus on the potential for toxic fan behavior, including instances of stalking and harassment by overly obsessed individuals, commonly referred to as "sasaeng fans." This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing challenges within the artist-fan dynamic in the evolving landscape of pop culture.
