In brief

With nearly 12% of Nevada's electorate consisting of Asian American voters, Filipino Americans are emerging as a crucial demographic. Candidates are actively engaging with the community to address their needs and concerns, recognizing their potential as decisive voters in the swing state.

In Las Vegas, a vibrant community of Filipino Americans is making its mark, increasingly taking on pivotal roles in education, healthcare, and the hospitality industry. After work, many gather at the California Hotel & Casino, known for its authentic Filipino dining, and support local Filipino-owned businesses, fostering a strong community spirit. Traditionally overlooked by political candidates focusing on other ethnic groups, Filipino American voters are now in the spotlight. This shift comes as both major political parties recognize the importance of this demographic in Nevada, aiming to sway a critical bloc of voters in the upcoming elections. Candidates donning traditional attire are showing up at community events, eager to connect. The campaign trail for Vice President Kamala Harris has been particularly proactive, showcasing "Pinoy Pride" billboards across Las Vegas, featuring local Filipino leaders discussing pressing issues like healthcare and economic empowerment. Joel Enriquez, a Filipino American business owner, voiced a newfound sense of agency within the community. "We're not just warm bodies at their campaign events anymore; they actually want to engage with us now," he proclaimed. As the largest ethnic group among Asian American voters in Nevada, Filipino Americans now constitute nearly 59,000 registered voters. With the state's competitive political landscape, where President Biden secured victory by just over 33,000 votes in 2020, their influence cannot be underestimated. The Asian American voter outreach initiative spearheaded by Vice President Harris this past summer attracted many Filipino community leaders, signaling a desire for deeper engagement. As elections loom, Filipino Americans are embracing their position and potential as decisive contributors to Nevada's political future, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns prioritized.
