NEW ORLEANS (AP) — U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Blank is fighting to prevent his wife, Annie Ramos, from being deported after she was detained on a military base in Louisiana just days following their wedding.

The situation has ignited protests from military family advocates, who label the detention as a demoralizing move during wartime that could compromise military recruitment efforts.

Blank, 23, expressed his anguish, stating, I never imagined that trying to do the right thing would lead to her being taken away from me. What was supposed to be the happiest week of our lives has turned into one of the hardest. The couple married in March, and Ramos was brought to the base to start the process of securing military benefits and working towards her green card.

Federal immigration authorities have stated her detention is part of a broader crackdown on undocumented immigrants, a shift from previous leniencies shown to military families. Ramos, who immigrated to the U.S. as a child in 2005, applied for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in 2020, but her case remains unresolved due to ongoing legal disputes surrounding the program.

Experts note that under the Trump administration, policies have shifted away from considering military service of family members as a significant factor when pursuing immigration enforcement. Experts indicate that Ramos’ case would have previously been straightforward to resolve before these changes.

Concern has grown among military advocates, with more than sixty members of Congress recently expressing that such arrests undermine the security and stability of military families, crucial to national defense.

Lydiah Owiti-Otienoh, who advocates for foreign-born military spouses, highlighted the detrimental effects of current policy changes, stating, If military families are not stable, national security is not stable.\

Blank's mother voiced her support for Ramos, underscoring the family’s belief in the values of the nation and their commitment to fighting for her return. We absolutely adore her. I believe in this country. And I believe we can do better than this — for Annie, for other military families, and for the values we hold dear,” she said.

As Blank continues to advocate for his wife’s release, he remains resolute, declaring, I want my wife home. And I will not stop fighting until she is back where she belongs, by my side.
