Ex‑Abbot Accused of Money Theft and Violations of Celibacy – A former head monk of the 14th‑century Wat Phutthaisawan temple in Ayutthaya, Phra Wachirayan Wi, has been arrested by Thai police on suspicion of embezzling more than 100 million baht (about $3 million) from the temple’s donation funds.
Investigators say the monk misappropriated money for two periods: one earmarked for temple renovation and another for producing sacred amulets. In both cases, the money never entered the temple’s official accounts, forcing the abbey to defrock the monk. Police also uncovered a video of him engaging in sexual activity with Punyavee Rungrueang, a 47‑year‑old woman now charged with supporting his illicit finances and allegedly blackmailing other monks.
Thailand’s Buddhist community has long faced allegations of monks violating celibacy vows, trafficking drugs, and committing financial crimes. In July last year, police introduced a hotline after nine monks were found to have possessed intimate footage of other monks, which the woman had used to extort nearly $12 million. The current case follows that trend and threads further distrust between the faithful and their spiritual leaders.
During a raid on Phra Wachirayan’s residence, police seized cash, gold bars, jewelry, and 35 gold amulets—worth roughly 6 million baht. They also found bank records showing tens of millions circulating through Punyavee’s accounts every year, indicating her role as a co‑conspirator. The authorities continued to investigate whether other individuals were involved.
Many monks in Thailand receive state stipends and are considered government officials, making accountability crucial for both religious and civic integrity.
