In a groundbreaking move, the globally recognized Powerball lottery will be crossing international borders this summer, reaching players in the United Kingdom. The collaboration between the Multi-State Lottery Association and Allwyn UK, operators of the UK’s National Lottery, aims to create new excitement in the lottery landscape.
Now for the first time, a lottery outside of the United States will actively contribute to the Powerball jackpot. Matt Strawn, the chief executive of the Iowa Lottery, emphasized that this expansion is about keeping Powerball relevant in a changing market.
With jackpots available in both U.S. dollars and British pounds, the new agreement promises to attract a larger pool of players, which in turn could drive jackpot amounts upward at a faster pace. Currently, U.S. players maintain the ticket cost of $2 and odds of 1 in 292.2 million when playing Powerball.
As Strawn mentioned, surveys indicate that players desire faster-growing jackpots, which can be achieved by increasing participation through international sales.
This new offering will provide UK players more substantial jackpot opportunities than what is currently available domestically and across Europe. For reference, the largest Powerball payout to date reached over $2 billion in 2022.
While the rules remain consistent, there will be differences in how prizes are announced and distributed, particularly concerning tax implications and payout options. Although jackpots will be equivalent between the countries, smaller prizes will be unique to each region. Allwyn UK's CEO, Andria Vidler, expressed enthusiasm for introducing Powerball, highlighting its potential “transformative jackpots and life-changing contribution to good causes.”
Powerball will maintain familiar traditional formats where players choose five white balls and one red Powerball number, with drawings continuing on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, making this expansion an exciting new chapter for lottery players on both sides of the Atlantic.
