In brief

In a decisive victory, the newly formed National People’s Power coalition in Sri Lanka has secured a two-thirds majority in parliament, allowing President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to advance his sweeping reform agenda.

The National People’s Power coalition, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has emerged victorious in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections, capturing 159 of 225 seats. This victory provides the coalition with an opportunity to pursue an extensive welfare agenda and combat corruption, in the wake of a devastating economic crisis that triggered mass protests in 2022.Dissanayake, who was elected as president in September, previously had only three seats in Parliament, leading him to dissolve the legislature to secure the recent elections. The aftermath of his predecessor, Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s, tenure saw Sri Lanka default on its external debt, plunging the population into a crisis marked by shortages of food, fuel, and essential goods. The public unrest stemming from these hardships resulted in Rajapaksa’s resignation amid widespread accusations of corruption. The political landscape in Sri Lanka has long been dominated by a few established parties since the nation’s independence in 1948. Mr. Dissanayake has presented himself as a candidate of change, appealing to voters’ discontent with ongoing nepotism and corruption within the political system. His coalition's success reflects a growing demand for new governance, particularly in light of the economic difficulties that still burden many citizens.Despite criticisms regarding his coalition's political inexperience from rivals such as Sajith Premadasa and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Dissanayake’s platform resonated deeply with Sri Lankans during the campaign. While the coalition hailed the need for welfare systems to support struggling families, it also raised flags regarding the fiscal policies established during Wickremesinghe’s administration, particularly concerning negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (I.M.F.). Moving forward, Dissanayake has committed to honoring existing agreements with the I.M.F., while still advocating for a reassessment of what he deems burdensome austerity measures that disproportionately affect the public. As Sri Lanka embarks on this new political chapter, many citizens hope for tangible changes in their quality of life under the new administration.
