James Tolkan, the actor celebrated for his memorable performances in film, has passed away at the age of 94. He died on a Thursday in Lake Placid, New York, where he lived, according to his booking agent, John Alcantar.

Known for his roles in iconic films such as “Top Gun” and “Back to the Future,” Tolkan brought life to characters like Vice Principal Gerald Strickland, known for his stern demeanor towards students like Marty McFly, portrayed by Michael J. Fox.

“You’ve got a real attitude problem, McFly,” he famously said in “Back to the Future.” In “Top Gun,” he portrayed Tom “Stinger” Jardian, a commanding officer with memorable quips that resonated with audiences.

Tolkan was born in Calumet, Michigan, and after serving in the Navy during the Korean War, he spent over two decades in New York's theater scene, notably as part of the original cast of “Glengarry Glen Ross.”

He is remembered not just for his cinematic roles but also for his character off-screen, as an avid art collector and animal lover. Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee Welles, who reflected on their life together and his passions.
