The Coachella music festival has kicked off with a spectacular display featuring surprise guest actor Susan Sarandon as part of pop star Sabrina Carpenter's headlining performance on Friday. Sarandon surprised the audience with a monologue depicting an older version of Carpenter amidst the singer's classic Hollywood-themed set.
Other celebrities joining Carpenter included comedian Will Ferrell and actor Sam Elliott, enhancing an already glamorous performance. The event, taking place in the California desert, is expected to draw over 100,000 attendees daily as reported by local police.
This year, however, weather agencies warned of strong wind and dust conditions across the area, resulting in a setback when DJ Anyma’s set was canceled due to safety concerns. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival released a statement citing joint decisions with Anyma regarding the cancellation while prioritizing safety.
Conditions remain challenging as the National Weather Service forecasts wind gusts reaching around 25 mph. Additionally, an air quality advisory is in effect due to windblown dust that may adversely affect sensitive groups.
Nonetheless, Sabrina Carpenter set the stage as she turned it into the Hollywood Hills, branding it as 'Sabrinawood.' Her performance began with a short film involving Elliott, who humorously let her off after a fictitious traffic stop. Comedian Ferrell later joined her on stage, dressed as an electrician, adding a dose of humor to the show.
Other performers on Friday included the global girl group KATSEYE and British artist Disclosure. This year’s festival will feature several UK artists such as Wet Leg and FKA Twigs, with Justin Bieber set to headline on Saturday and Karol G taking over on Sunday. A repeat of the line-ups is also scheduled for next weekend.
Coachella, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, has become one of the most prestigious music festivals worldwide since its inception in 2002.
