Three people have died after a helicopter crashed off the Hawaiian island of Kauai, police reported today.

The helicopter involved was carrying one pilot and four passengers. Two survivors were quickly rescued and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to police, the helicopter was operated by Airborne Aviation, known for promoting 'doors-off thrill-seeking adventure tours' that showcase Hawaii's breathtaking waterfalls, canyons, and beaches.

The U.S. Coast Guard stated that the helicopter crash-landed about 100 yards from Kalalau beach. As of now, the authorities have not released the identities of the deceased.

Emergency services responded promptly to reports of the crash at around 3:45 PM local time, collaborating closely with the coast guard and fire department.

Kauai's Mayor Derek Kawakami expressed gratitude for the recovery efforts, emphasizing their commitment to treating visitors as part of the local family: Here on Kaua'i, whenever somebody puts their feet on our soil, they are one of ours. He noted that their first responders approach their duties with this spirit in mind.

Andrew Williams, the coast guard's search and rescue mission coordinator in Honolulu, shared his sorrow over the loss of lives, extending thoughts to the victims' families and friends.

Touring Kauai by helicopter is popular, especially considering the island's stunning landscape, famously featured in the Jurassic Park film franchise. The 50-minute helicopter tour by Airborne Aviation allows a maximum of four passengers at a cost of $348 each.

This incident follows a similar tragedy in July 2024, where three individuals lost their lives in a helicopter crash caused by turbulence, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report.

Efforts are ongoing to discuss tour safety regulations, aiming to prevent further tragedies in this picturesque but perilous landscape.
