A woman and a child jumped from a rooftop to escape a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, where authorities say a father fatally shot eight children, including seven of his own.
Officials said they were first alerted to the gun attack in an emergency phone call at 05:55 CDT (11:55 GMT) on Sunday. The caller reported being on top of the house while the suspect remained inside.
Police did not identify the survivors or disclose their connection to the attacker, but both were reported to be in stable condition.
The gunman, identified as Shamar Elkins, was involved in a gun battle with officers and was found dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
Two adult women, including the children's mother, were also injured but are recovering in hospital. A ninth child was hospitalized after jumping from the roof while escaping the shooting.
The children who lost their lives included siblings and one cousin, with ages ranging from 3 to 11 years old. Their identities were confirmed by grieving mothers, highlighting the deep tragedy of the event.
Chief of Police Wayne Smith recounted that the emergency call came just minutes before the situation escalated, leading to further violent incidents nearby involving carjackings and additional gunfire.
No children were found inside the vehicle connected to the suspect, and police are still working to determine the motive for the shooting, which appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute. Sheriff Henry Whitehorn emphasized the need for greater community initiatives to combat domestic violence.
In a heart-wrenching reflection, community leaders expressed disbelief that only days after the opening of a new domestic violence center, such a tragedy could occur.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on understanding the perilous dynamics that led to this devastating event.
