In a devastating event at New York's LaGuardia Airport, two young Canadian pilots, Mackenzie Gunther and Antoine Forest, tragically lost their lives during a collision between an Air Canada plane and a fire truck. Both pilots were on the cusp of promising careers, and their untimely deaths have left their families and communities in mourning.
While the official identities of the pilots have not yet been disclosed by authorities, family members have confirmed that they are Gunther and Forest. The accident occurred as the regional jet was landing with about 70 passengers and crew members onboard. Fortunately, most of those aboard the flight sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
According to FAA Administrator Brian Bedford, These were two young men at the start of their careers. It’s an absolute tragedy that we’re sitting here with their loss. An investigation is currently underway, with federal officials noting that a runway warning system had failed to trigger an alarm moments before the tragedy.
The Legacy of Antoine Forest
Antoine Forest, identified through his great aunt Jeannette Gagnier, had always aspired to be a pilot. His family and the mayor of his hometown, Coteau-du-Lac, expressed deep condolences over the loss, highlighting the impact of his passing on their community.
Forest's brother Cédric shared memories on social media, expressing heart-wrenching sentiments about their bond and the premature farewell he had to say to his brother.
Mackenzie Gunther's Promising Future
Mackenzie Gunther graduated from Seneca Polytechnic's Honors Bachelor of Aviation Technology program earlier this year and was actively engaged in the Jazz Aviation Pathways Program at the time of the accident. The institution has paid tribute to Gunther, lowering flags to half-staff in his honor.
Survivors of the collision expressed gratitude towards both pilots, believing their quick actions saved many lives during the incident. Described as having 'incredible reflexes', Gunther and Forest are being remembered not just for their tragic end but for their dedication and aspirations in aviation.
