The suspect in last week's mass shooting at Brown University has been found dead in a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, following a six-day multi-state manhunt, police say.

They identified the suspect as Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a Portuguese national who studied at the university in Providence, Rhode Island, about 25 years ago.

Providence police chief Oscar Perez stated that video evidence and tips from the public led investigators to a car-rental location where they found the suspect's name and matched him to their person of interest.

Officials suspect Valente also killed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Nuno F Gomes Loureiro, two days after the December 13 shooting at Brown.

Initial findings suggest Valente died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with police unable to determine how long he may have been in the storage facility. Authorities are still searching for a motive behind these tragic events.

The investigation has drawn considerable public attention, especially as it connects to two prestigious academic institutions which once shared a tightly-knit scholarly community with Valente.

Investigators are continuing to untangle the details of these events, emphasizing that despite the suspect being found, their work is far from over.
