In a significant move following recent school shootings in Turkey that left several dead and injured, police have detained 162 individuals accused of spreading controversial content online regarding the incidents. The detentions reflect a stern government response to the aftermath of these tragic events.
During a press briefing, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek accused social media accounts of disseminating footage of the shootings and promoting fear among the public. Top government officials are now calling for increased security measures in schools across the nation as a result of these heinous acts.
The first shooting occurred at Ahmet Koyuncu High School in the southeast, injuring 16 individuals, while the second attack at Ayser Calik Secondary School in Kahramanmaras resulted in the deaths of nine, including eight students and a teacher. Reports indicate that the attacker, linked to previous incidents, had planned these actions in advance and had connections to known criminal figures.
In addition to the detentions, restrictions have been placed on over a thousand social media accounts, and 67 other individuals have been taken into custody for threatening school safety with alarming online posts. Families and communities are still reeling from the shock of these attacks, as they gather for funerals of the young victims.
As the nation mourns, one victim, identified only as ten-year-old Zeynep, has been described by her family as a bright child who has become an enduring symbol of innocence lost amidst this violence.
