In brief

The former Miss Grand International, Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, has been arrested for promoting fraudulent fiber gummies alongside fellow influencers, causing a significant scandal in Vietnam.

In a shocking turn of events, Vietnamese beauty queen and social media influencer Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien has been arrested for consumer fraud related to the promotion of counterfeit fiber supplements. Known for her title as Miss Grand International 2021, Nguyen’s reputation has taken a considerable hit following public backlash against the Kera Supergreens Gummies she heavily marketed across her social media platforms. The controversy began when a consumer sent the gummies for testing, revealing they contained only 16mg of fiber instead of the 200mg claimed on their packaging. This prompted an investigation, during which authorities discovered that the gummies were produced with subpar ingredients and lacked proper labeling regarding their fiber content. Nguyen, along with her influencer partners Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc, initially faced fines in March after publicly apologizing for their misleading claims. However, as the investigation unfolded, the stakes grew higher—Pham and Hang, alongside company officials, were arrested for producing counterfeit goods and defrauding customers. Authorities announced Nguyen's arrest on Monday, asserting that her promotional efforts misled customers, resulting in over 100,000 boxes of the gummies being sold before sales ceased amid the scandal. Since winning her beauty title, Nguyen has become a prominent figure in Vietnam, endorsing numerous brands and participating in reality shows, even receiving accolades from the government for her contributions to the nation. This turn of events raises serious concerns about accountability and transparency in influencer marketing, particularly in the rapidly digitizing marketplace.
