In brief

As the situation in Gaza deteriorates, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) has reported the complete depletion of its food stocks, marking a critical point for the 2.1 million residents affected by the ongoing Israeli blockade. With food prices skyrocketing and essential supplies dwindling, the need for humanitarian assistance has never been greater.

The WFP announced that their last remaining food supplies were delivered to hot meal kitchens on Friday, which they fear will run out in just days. The blockade, first imposed on March 2, has extended for seven weeks, severely limiting the flow of humanitarian aid. Although Israel insists it adheres to international law, they have restricted aid, stating that their actions aim to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages. The ongoing blockade has forced all bakeries supported by the WFP to cease operations and emptied food parcels meant to sustain families for two weeks. With access to medicine, medical supplies, and equipment also hampered under the blockade, hospitals are struggling to manage the surge of casualties from continued Israeli airstrikes. The effects on food prices have been disastrous, as costs surged by up to 1,400% post-ceasefire, dramatically heightening nutrition risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly. The hot meal kitchens, vital for survival, can now only serve half of the population, contributing to just a quarter of their daily food requirements. The WFP has urgently called for the reopening of Gaza’s borders for aid and trade, emphasizing the dire consequences of failing to act. Currently, over 116,000 tonnes of food aid are available at aid corridors, ready for distribution the moment borders reopen.Despite international criticism from nations like the UK, France, and Germany regarding the blockade, the Israeli foreign ministry maintains their stance, arguing that aid is sufficiently flowing into Gaza and that they bear no responsibility for supply issues due to perceived hijacking of aid by Hamas. As the cycle of violence continues, with Hamas rejecting proposals for a new ceasefire, tensions remain high, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza presents a growing challenge that requires immediate attention from all parties involved.
