In brief
The violent attack on a camp for displaced people in Sudan's Darfur region, claiming the lives of at least 40 individuals, underscores the deadly realities of the protracted conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Open hostilities continue to threaten the safety and survival of countless civilians, as famine looms.
At least 40 people have been killed in a devastating attack on a camp for displaced individuals in Sudan's western Darfur region, according to reports from aid organizations working in the area. The incident, occurring on Monday, was attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that has been engaged in intense fighting with the Sudanese army since the escalation of conflict in April 2023.The Abu Shouk Emergency Response Room, a local aid organization, stated that the assault resulted in numerous casualties, with many victims shot inside their homes, while others were shot in public areas. Reports from the resistance committee in the nearby city of el-Fasher corroborated this information, citing that el-Fasher is among the last strongholds for the army amidst the two-year-long civil war.The ongoing conflict has triggered a significant humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations warning that families trapped in el-Fasher face dwindling resources and potential starvation. Local Sudanese media reported that the camp found itself in the crossfire of fighting in the city, which has been severely attacked in recent days.Additionally, a US-based organization analyzing satellite imagery observed a concentration of 40 light vehicles in the north-west neighborhoods of the camp, suggesting that the assault originated from that direction. The Yale Humanitarian Research Lab, which is investigating claims of violence against civilians, described images showing RSF members reportedly shooting at people who were attempting to flee and using ethnic slurs during the attack. The tent settlement, created over two decades ago for non-Arab communities, including the Fur and Zaghawa people who fled aggression from the Janjaweed militia, has frequently been a target during the ongoing war. Notably, the RSF has its roots in this infamous militia, which has been accused of genocide and ethnic cleansing throughout the conflict. Moreover, with Zaghawa fighters joining forces with the army to defend el-Fasher, some analysts speculate that the RSF was intentionally targeting Zaghawa civilians residing in the camp. Similar attacks have occurred at displaced persons camps throughout Darfur since the war's outbreak, including an incident in April that led to over 100 deaths and a mass exodus from the Zamzam camp.Since the onset of the civil war in April 2023, tens of thousands of lives have been lost, and around 12 million individuals have been forcibly displaced, while famine conditions have been declared in various regions of the country.
