The giant saltwater crocodile named Cassius, weighing nearly one tonne and measuring almost 5.5 meters (18 feet), has died at the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island, Australia. Believed to be at least 110 years old, Cassius was recognized by the Guinness World Records in 2011 for holding the title of the largest crocodile in captivity. He was originally captured in the Northern Territory in the 1980s, where he was known for hunting cattle and attacking boats.
Cassius was a cherished member of the family at the sanctuary, described fondly by the habitat's founders, particularly George Craig, who acquired him in 1987. The sanctuary expressed its sorrow on social media, mourning the loss of "a beloved mate" who "brought joy and companionship" to Craig for over 37 years. The recent relocation of Mr. Craig to Cairns coincided with a notable decline in Cassius's health, although the habitat emphasized that he lived longer than most crocodiles in the wild.
Visitors and fans of Cassius have expressed their condolences, acknowledging the joy he brought to many during his time at the sanctuary. As the habitat indicates that operations might be limited in the coming days, they extend gratitude to everyone who showed kindness to Cassius throughout his remarkable life, highlighting the impact he made on both local culture and conservation efforts.
