A former leading Ukrainian official has been shot dead outside an American school in Madrid, Spain, causing shock and concern within both local and international communities. Andriy Portnov, 51, was gunned down shortly after he dropped off his children at a school located in the Pozuelo de Alarcón area of the capital. Eyewitnesses reported hearing several gunshots as he walked towards his car in the school parking lot.
The assailant, who fled into a wooded area nearby, has not been identified, and authorities are currently searching for the suspect. Witnesses noted that the attacker appeared to be a thin man dressed in a blue tracksuit. Some reports suggested a possible accomplice on a motorcycle. Emergency services confirmed that Portnov suffered multiple gunshot wounds before succumbing to his injuries.
Portnov's political background is significant; he served as a deputy head in the administration of Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russian president ousted following the 2014 revolution. His controversial career saw him involved in attempts to control the judiciary in Ukraine, leading to sanctions from the US Treasury. Although he returned to Ukraine in 2019 after Volodymyr Zelensky's election, he faced legal challenges and accusations of treason linked to the annexation of Crimea, which were later dismissed.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, and the incident has raised questions about potential links to previous such incidents involving political figures. As authorities investigate, they have alerted the school community that all students were confirmed safe inside the premises during the attack. The ongoing search for the perpetrator brings significant attention to concerns about political violence and international safety, especially for figures connected to Ukraine's tumultuous political landscape.
