In brief

In a surreal flight experience, Peng Yujiang found himself battling the elements in a life-or-death situation after a sudden updraft pulled him far above the surface.

A 55-year-old paraglider, Peng Yujiang, experienced a harrowing flight in north-west China when he was inadvertently lifted to an altitude of 8,500m (27,800ft). While testing his equipment at just 3,000m over the Qilian mountains, he was unexpectedly caught in a powerful "cloud suck" updraft, leading to his alarming ascent. The incident, which took place on Saturday, was captured on video and quickly gained traction on Douyin, China's TikTok equivalent. In his chilling recount, Mr. Peng described the moment as terrifying, engulfed in thick, white clouds, rendering him disoriented and unable to determine his flight direction. “Without the compass, I wouldn't have known which way I was going. I thought I was flying straight, but in reality, I was spinning,” he shared with China Media Group.Survival at such an altitude poses significant risks, primarily due to dangerously low oxygen levels and frigid temperatures that can drop to -40°C. He expressed his desperation during the experience, revealing, “I wanted to come down quickly, but I just couldn't. I was lifted higher and higher until I was inside the cloud.”Having four-and-a-half years of paragliding experience, Mr. Peng reflected on the possibility of losing consciousness during the turbulent descent and described his struggle to regain control as his glider spiraled upward. The incident has prompted an investigation from Chinese authorities, resulting in Mr. Peng being suspended for six months as his flight was deemed unauthorized. It was reported that he had initially planned only to test the comfort of his parachute on the ground, but strong winds suddenly threw him into an unpredictable airborne adventure.
