US rapper Soulja Boy, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was taken into custody in the Melrose neighborhood of Los Angeles around 2:35 AM local time on Sunday. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the arrest stemmed from a traffic stop during which officers discovered that Way was allegedly in possession of a firearm.
The 35-year-old artist gained fame with his viral hit "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" in 2007, which became synonymous with a popular dance trend of the time. However, this latest arrest marks a significant chapter in his ongoing legal challenges, as he is now suspected of possessing a firearm while being a convicted felon.
In addition to his recent arrest, Soulja Boy was previously ordered to pay $4.25 million in damages to a woman who accused him of sexual battery and abuse earlier this year. The unnamed individual alleged that Way regularly subjected her to violent abuse and kept her in confinement after hiring her as an assistant. Although the rapper denied those allegations, he was found liable for sexual battery, assault, and gender violence by a jury in a civil trial.
