Cassius, the world’s largest crocodile in captivity, was a monumental figure at Marineland Melanesia, where he became a beloved tourist attraction. Weighing nearly one tonne and over 110 years old, Cassius mesmerized visitors with his presence after being captured in Australia’s Northern Territory in the 1980s. Recognized by Guinness World Records in 2011 for his size, Cassius’s journey began with a reputation for hunting cattle and interacting with boaters before being brought to the sanctuary.
His life was closely intertwined with that of his caretaker, George Craig, who described Cassius as his “best mate” for more than 37 years. Following a recent relocation of Craig to Cairns, Cassius’s health reportedly declined, leading to his passing. The sanctuary’s heartfelt tribute reflected on the joy Cassius brought to many and expressed gratitude to the visitors who supported him throughout his life.
Marineland Melanesia is expected to operate in a limited capacity during this period of mourning, honoring a creature that was not only a record-holder but also a beloved family member of the sanctuary community. Cassius’s extraordinary presence will be missed by all who knew him.
