In brief
Facing a potential 25% tariff on exports, South Korea is aiming to leverage its booming shipbuilding sector in negotiations with the U.S, hoping to mitigate economic impacts and foster collaboration in maritime industries.
As South Korea approaches trade discussions with the United States next week amid the looming threat of imposing a substantial tariff on its exports, it has identified a strategic advantage: its robust shipbuilding industry. As the world’s second-largest shipbuilder, trailing only behind China, South Korea aims to appeal to U.S. President Trump through this vital sector, emphasizing the potential collaboration to reinvigorate America's maritime capabilities.Officials in Seoul believe this thriving industry could serve as a bargaining chip in negotiations aimed at countering the anticipated 25 percent tariff affecting exports including Hyundai and Kia vehicles, steel and aluminum products, and LG home appliances. President Trump has indicated that shipbuilding must play a key role in any new trade agreements between the two nations, opening the door for South Korea to propose extensive purchases of liquefied natural gas from the U.S., which could help amend the trade balance."Given the administration's expressed interest in shipbuilding, it will serve as a significant negotiating advantage for us," noted Ahn Duk-geun, South Korea's trade and industry minister during a recent parliamentary session. The country's finance minister, Choi Sang-mok, is also slated to meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington, further strengthening ties as South Korea lends itself to seeking dialogue rather than confrontation, distinguishing its approach from the more belligerent tactics employed by larger nations like China and Europe. As they prepare for these discussions, the South Korean ministers are hopeful that their nation’s shipbuilding credentials will not only mitigate potential financial repercussions but also pave the way for deeper cooperation in shared maritime initiatives.
