In brief
Unicef's report underscores the dire circumstances faced by children in Gaza, where a surge in violence has led to the deaths of over 322 children since a new offensive began. As humanitarian aid continues to be blocked and living conditions deteriorate, the need for international attention and intervention has become increasingly urgent.
At least 322 children have been reported killed in the Gaza Strip since the inception of Israel's renewed offensive, as stated by Unicef. The international agency for children also reported that at least 609 children suffered injuries during this tumultuous period. Unicef Executive Director Catherine Russell emphasized the urgency of the situation: "The ceasefire in Gaza provided a desperately needed lifeline for Gaza's children and hope for a path to recovery. But children have again been plunged into a cycle of deadly violence and deprivation."Israel's latest offensive, which began on March 18, was triggered by accusations against Hamas for rejecting a U.S. proposal aimed at extending the ceasefire and securing the release of 59 hostages still held in Gaza. In retaliation, Hamas has alleged that Israel violated the original agreement made in January. Unicef reports that relentless and indiscriminate bombardments resumed in the region, recording a heart-wrenching rate of 100 child fatalities or injuries daily from March 18 to March 31.The majority of the casualties occurred among displaced children seeking shelter in makeshift tents or damaged homes, as per Unicef's data. The agency bases its statistics on information released by the Gaza health ministry, which operates under Hamas. These figures are recognized as reliable by the UN and other international bodies, although the Israeli government has contested their accuracy. Journalists are currently barred from independently verifying the situation within Gaza due to restrictions imposed by Israel.Throughout the course of the ongoing conflict, which has gripped the region for over 18 months, Unicef has reported that 15,000 children are believed to have died, while over 34,000 have been injured and nearly 1 million have experienced repeated displacements. Conditions have drastically deteriorated, exacerbated by an Israel-imposed blockade on humanitarian aid since March 2, which marks the longest period of aid restriction since the war began. Unicef warns that the lack of essential supplies could lead to malnutrition, disease outbreaks, and other preventable health crises, ultimately resulting in more child fatalities. In a recent development, the UN announced a reduction of its operations in Gaza following the deaths of numerous first responders and medics due to Israeli military actions. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are engaged in a campaign against Hamas, which has been designated as a terrorist organization by multiple countries, following an unprecedented cross-border assault on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and approximately 251 hostages taken. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, the conflict has claimed over 50,399 lives in Gaza since its escalation.
