MINCO, Okla. — A devastating incident unfolded on Monday night when a school bus transporting members of a local softball team collided with a deer, leading to a serious accident that overturned the vehicle. Seven individuals were reported injured, including one adult who is currently in critical condition and four students who remain stable, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP).
The crash occurred on State Highway 152 in Grady County, approximately 40 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. Out of the 17 passengers aboard the bus at the time of the accident, some students were transported from the scene by their parents before the arrival of law enforcement.
The OHP has confirmed that the investigation into the crash's causes is ongoing, enlisting the support of the National Transportation Safety Board. The only seat equipped with a seatbelt on the bus was the driver's seat, raising serious safety concerns highlighted by Minco Public Schools Superintendent Kevin Sims.
In response to the tragic event, the Minco School District decided to close schools on Tuesday. The community has rallied together, with local leaders, including U.S. Senator James Lankford, expressing their condolences and prayers for the affected students, coaches, and their families.
Furthermore, the Minco First Baptist Church opened its sanctuary for those wishing to gather in prayer during this difficult time. The softball team was slated to play against the Riverside Indian School earlier that evening, marking a devastating turn of events for the team and the surrounding community.
