In brief

As we mark five years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, reflections emerge on how our lives, relationships, and intentions have shifted in response to its impacts. From increased connection to nostalgic longing for simpler times, it prompts us to reconsider what we value in our daily interactions.

As March 2025 marks the five-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us find ourselves reflecting on how this unprecedented period has altered the landscape of our lives and relationships. For some, the distant memory of March 2020—a time marked by uncertainty—stirs emotions linked to moments of both isolation and unexpected connection.During the early days of the pandemic, when the world seemed to pause, individuals engaged in new forms of creativity to cope with confinement. Online gatherings transformed social life, with virtual happy hours and distant birthday celebrations becoming the norm. These experiences, while innovative, left many yearning for the tactile, vibrant connections that only in-person interactions could provide. As we emerge from these years of enforced separation, it is essential to take stock of the vows we made about how we would approach life differently once things normalized. Many promised themselves they would prioritize more social gatherings, improve their relationships, and cherish everyday interactions. Yet, as times have changed and opportunities for socialization have returned, have those intentions truly manifested? There is a certain irony in how easy it is to revert to old patterns of behavior now that the hustle and bustle of life has resumed. The communal warmth that fueled intentions during lockdown—every hug calculated for safety, every touch significant—can quickly fade into routine. Furthermore, as our environments expand and our schedules fill up, reflecting on our past resolutions can feel like an uphill battle.Collectively, we must ask ourselves how to recapture the passion and intentionality that emerged during that time of disruption. While much is different from those early pandemic days, re-evaluating our approaches to connection may facilitate a renewed sense of community and appreciation in our lives. Ultimately, these reflections serve not just as a memory of the past but as a serious invitation to explore how we can reshape our futures.
