In brief

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupts creating ash clouds and triggering emergency protocols in surrounding areas.

In a dramatic geological event, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted on Tuesday, spewing a massive ash cloud that reached over 11 kilometers into the atmosphere, prompting Indonesian authorities to issue the highest level of alert. The eruption occurred at 17:35 local time, as defined by the country's volcanology agency, directly impacting the tourist-friendly island of Flores. A strict 7-kilometer exclusion zone has been established around the twin-peaked volcano, which stands at 1,584 meters high, to safeguard residents. At this point, there have been no reports of damages or injuries resulting from the eruption. However, the volcano has been particularly volatile; it previously erupted multiple times in November 2022, leading to nine fatalities and displacing thousands of individuals. The recent ash cloud has also caused the cancellation of flights in and out of the region.Muhammad Wafid, head of the geology agency, emphasized the importance of avoiding activities within the 7-kilometer radius of the eruption site. He also warned of potential lahar floods, which occur when heavy rainfall combines volcanic debris and ash into fast-moving flows. Residents are advised to wear protective face masks to shield against ash fall, and evacuation procedures are already underway for at least one village, with ash precipitation reported in several others outside the exclusion zone.Warnings of tremors indicate continued volcanic activity, highlighting the necessity for vigilance among those living in proximity to Lewotobi Laki-Laki. The region witnessed its last eruption in May when officials similarly elevated alert levels. This volcano, known as "man" in Indonesian, shares its landscape with the taller and less aggressive twin, Perempuan, meaning "woman."
