In brief

The incident highlights the unique challenges faced by rail operators, especially during busy holiday periods in cities like Osaka, which is currently hosting the World Expo.

In an unusual event, one of Japan's busiest bullet train lines came to a halt after a snake wrapped itself around a power line, leading to a power outage that suspended Tokaido Shinkansen services between Tokyo and Osaka. The disruption began around 17:25 local time on Wednesday, with services resuming approximately an hour and a half later, as reported by the Central Japan Railway Company and local media sources. The incident occurred during Golden Week, Japan's peak holiday season, which features four national holidays within seven days, resulting in heightened travel activity across the nation. Additionally, the ongoing World Expo in Osaka has attracted millions of domestic and international visitors, further intensifying the travel demand. The snake was discovered tangled between the Gifu-Hashima and Maibara stations, leading to suspensions of both Tokyo-bound trains from Shin-Osaka to Nagoya and Osaka-bound trains from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo, as reported by Kyodo News. As passengers waited for updates, many gathered near ticket machines and other staff members, forming large queues.Satoshi Tagawa, a frequent shinkansen traveler, expressed surprise at the incident, stating it was the first instance he had experienced train suspensions due to a power outage. Conversely, 26-year-old Kazutoshi Tachi expressed frustration with the ongoing service disruptions and called for more reliable operations. Interestingly, this isn't the first time a snake has caused a disruption to shinkansen services. In April of the following year, another snake led to a brief 17-minute delay while it was safely removed from train tracks between Nagoya and Tokyo, showcasing the unusual challenges rail services can face.
