In a heartfelt gathering, mourners filled Webster County High School in West Virginia this past weekend to honor U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a dedicated member of the National Guard who tragically lost her life in a shooting incident in Washington, D.C. Friends, family, and community members remembered Beckstrom as an individual who had a profound impact on those around her.
Beckstrom, aged 20, was killed while serving in the National Guard as part of efforts to enhance security in the nation’s capital. Her fellow service member, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, aged 24, remains hospitalized and in critical condition following the same incident.
“Sarah was a favorite daughter of Webster County,” said Gov. Patrick Morrisey, who spoke during the vigil. “She had a lot of kindness and certainly courage. Though her life was cut short, the mark she left on her community will endure.”
Community members gathered, lighting candles and sharing memories of Beckstrom, who was described by her school principal as a “kind and caring” student, known for her effort to uplift those around her.
Beckstrom enlisted in the National Guard just after graduating high school in June 2023, embarking on a path dedicated to serving her country. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death have prompted an outpouring of support for her family and fellow service members, with ongoing prayers for Wolfe’s recovery.
As the community reflects on Beckstrom’s legacy, arrangements for her funeral are still being finalized, with the local funeral home actively coordinating with the family for service details. The loss of such a vibrant young life has left a profound sadness in the hearts of many, but also a sense of solidarity as they honor her memory.
