Five members of the Sydney Swans have been suspended from the Australian Football League (AFL) following an alleged sexual assault that took place in the early hours of Monday. The incident occurred at the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne, where the players were staying after a weekend match.
The club announced that Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon and Riley Bice will miss the rest of the season. Their suspension comes as Victoria Police open an investigation, though no player has been arrested or charged to date.
In a statement, Swans’ chairman Andrew Pridham apologized to fans, teammates and the wider community, noting that the actions breached club standards over alcohol consumption and bringing women to the hotel. Chief executive Matthew Pavlich added that the club was “deeply embarrassed” and concerned for the welfare of all involved parties.
The AFL’s chief executive Andrew Dillon said the allegations are “deeply concerning” and reaffirmed support for the club’s disciplinary actions. Unlike sports that impose automatic stand‑downs, the AFL addresses such cases on a discretionary basis.
