Two Indonesian peacekeepers were killed on Monday by a 'roadside explosion' in southern Lebanon, according to UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who cited the initial investigation's findings.

The explosion was reported as being of 'unknown origin' and completely destroyed the peacekeepers' vehicle near Bani Hayyan, as per statements from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil).

A third peacekeeper suffered serious injuries in the explosion, while another was also hurt. This incident marks the second fatality involving peacekeepers in less than 24 hours, following another attack where an Indonesian peacekeeper was killed by a projectile explosion in Adchit Al Qusayr.

Unifil has initiated investigations into both incidents. Lacroix indicated that the investigation's initial findings point to the explosion affecting the convoy, with further statements suggesting that the fatalities were likely caused by an improvised explosive device (IED).

Furthermore, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, Stéphane Dujarric, stated that the explosion on Sunday was probably caused by an explosive device that struck the peacekeepers' position.

The recent fatalities come on the heels of the Israeli military's announcement to increase operations against Hezbollah, following escalating hostilities including rocket fire from Hezbollah into Israel in retaliation to US-Israeli strikes against Iran.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported internal findings that the Bani Hayyan explosion was not a consequence of IDF action and denied placement of any device by its troops in the area.

Additionally, four IDF soldiers were reported killed in an operation in southern Lebanon, emphasizing the ongoing volatility within the region, which has seen continued civilian casualties amid military activities since a ceasefire was instituted.

Both the UN and the Indonesian government have expressed their condolences and reiterated the need for protections for peacekeepers, highlighting their critical role in preserving peace amidst rising tensions in the area.
