In brief
Eight passengers on a Ryanair flight experienced injuries due to severe turbulence, prompting an emergency diversion to Memmingen Airport in southern Germany.
On Wednesday night, an unexpected bout of severe turbulence struck a Ryanair flight en route from Berlin to Milan, resulting in eight passengers sustaining injuries. According to Bavarian police, among those injured were a two-year-old child who suffered bruising and a woman with a head injury. Emergency services took three individuals to a local hospital for further treatment, while others received care on-site.The turbulence, attributed to adverse weather conditions, prevented the flight from landing at its intended destination, Munich Airport. Consequently, the flight diverted to Memmingen Airport, situated to the west of Munich, where it landed safely at 20:44 local time (18:44 GMT). Ryanair expressed regret for the incident, stating that the flight's captain had requested medical assistance prior to landing. As a result of the diversion, the Southern Bavaria Aviation Authority declined approval for onward flights that evening. Ryanair coordinated alternative transport for passengers to Milan later that night and arranged a replacement flight for the following morning. In total, the flight carried 179 passengers alongside six crew members, and authorities reported that passengers' ages varied from two to 59. All onboard were subjected to precautionary injury checks following the turbulence incident.
