A significant avalanche struck the Eiger mountain in the Swiss Alps around midday on Saturday, prompting local police to initiate a large-scale rescue operation. According to Bern Cantonal police, several individuals were buried under the snow, and multiple rescue teams have been deployed to search for survivors.
The Eiger, towering at 3,967 meters (approximately 13,000 feet), is renowned not only for its breathtaking beauty but also for its treacherous north face, which is considered one of the most formidable climbing challenges in the world. This iconic peak is located near several popular tourist destinations, including Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen.
As rescue efforts continue, authorities are urging caution among climbers and outdoor enthusiasts, particularly during unpredictable weather conditions often associated with the winter months in mountainous regions.
The situation remains critical as rescuers work tirelessly in challenging conditions, hoping to bring those affected to safety.
