In a significant appeal, Turkey's First Lady Emine Erdogan has urged Melania Trump to raise her voice for the children undergoing immense suffering in Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict. Reflecting on Mrs. Trump's previously demonstrated compassion towards children affected by the wars in Ukraine, Erdogan's letter implores her to extend this advocacy to the Palestinian children who have been trapped in a humanitarian crisis.
Published by the Turkish presidency, the letter described Gaza as a "children's cemetery," urging unity in addressing what she calls an injustice. Emphasizing the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict, Mrs. Erdogan highlighted alarming statistics from the UN, which show that half a million people in Gaza City are grappling with famine. Among them, 132,000 children are at immediate risk of malnutrition.
“The phrase ‘unknown baby’ written on the shrouds of thousands of Gazan children opens irreparable wounds in our consciences,” Erdogan poignantly stated, calling for Mrs. Trump to engage directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to press for an end to the humanitarian afflictions besetting Gaza.
Traditionally focused on environmental issues rather than political ones, Emine Erdogan’s outreach marks a poignant moment. Her past correspondence has included letters regarding Syrian refugees and previous appeals condemning violence in Gaza.
The urgency of her request comes on the heels of a concerning report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which affirms the existence of famine in Gaza City and indicates catastrophic conditions for over 640,000 individuals. The alarming toll on children is particularly troubling, with one in three experiencing acute malnutrition, and harrowing statistics reveal that one-third of those malnourished children under five might not survive.
While Israel disputes the claims of famine, accusing IPC experts of bias, the report coincides with an escalating military campaign in Gaza, initiated in response to a deadly attack by Hamas. Since this escalation on October 7, the health ministry in Gaza has reported over 62,000 fatalities, as the population continues to face displacements, destruction of homes, and significant collapse of healthcare and basic sanitation infrastructures.
