In brief

A remarkable medical feat took place in Delhi, where surgeons operated on a 17-year-old boy to excise a parasitic twin, leading to hopes for a newly active life.

Doctors in Delhi recently accomplished a groundbreaking surgery on a 17-year-old boy with a rare condition known as "parasitic twin," where a poorly developed sibling relies on the host for survival. This condition, which occurs in less than one in 100,000 births, marked a significant turning point for the boy, who had been living with an extra set of legs, buttocks, and genitalia protruding from his abdomen. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Asuri Krishna and a specialized team at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims), the complex two-hour operation was carried out successfully. "Parasitic twins are incredibly rare, and we had to rely on our medical instincts since very few guides exist," stated Dr. Krishna. The child’s unique case contained two fully developed legs weighing about 15 kg that were nourished by a major blood vessel in the chest, creating intricate challenges during the surgery. The surgical team employed advanced imaging techniques and meticulous planning to dissect the shared tissues and blood vessels connecting the twins. Their tasks included first eliminating the parasitic twin and subsequently addressing a cyst discovered within the patient’s abdomen. The delicate surgery was completed in an impressive two-and-a-half hours. During the procedure, the patient faced a sudden drop in blood pressure, attributed to 30-40% of his blood volume being diverted to the parasitic twin. The surgical team responded swiftly to stabilize the young patient, who has since made a full recovery. Before the surgery, the boy experienced significant societal challenges, including stigma, ridicule, and mental health issues stemming from his unusual physical appearance. He shared that these experiences led to isolation and caused him to leave school. Now, with newfound optimism, he expresses excitement about living an active lifestyle and pursuing education and employment, stating, "A new world has opened up to me."
