In brief
In response to President Trump's contentious Gaza development plan, leaders from Gulf Arab nations are meeting to create an alternative that prioritizes Palestinian residents' rights and potential statehood.
The leaders of Gulf Arab nations are set to convene in Riyadh this Friday to form a unified stance against President Trump’s controversial proposal aimed at transforming Gaza under U.S. control, which includes displacing its Palestinian inhabitants. This urgent meeting precedes a broader Arab League summit scheduled for March 4 in Egypt.Trump’s suggestion to convert Gaza into the "Riviera of the Middle East" drew widespread condemnation from across the Arab countries. In reaction, his administration's representatives, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, challenged regional leaders to present a better alternative to their plans for Gaza.In an effort to respond effectively, nations such as Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates have embarked on discussions to construct a viable proposal that would retain the two million Palestinian residents in Gaza while promoting their reconstruction and eventual Palestinian statehood.Although various ambitious plans have been offered in the past, momentum and consensus have been lacking. The most recent plan came from Emirati billionaire Khalaf al-Habtoor, who proposed an expeditious renovation of Gaza within years instead of decades. The upcoming meetings of Arab leaders signify a critical moment in solidarity and action to uphold the rights and dignity of Palestinians amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.
