Upon his release, the stark physical transformation left even his daughter struggling to recognize him. Tikhanovsky, a determined figure in Belarus's opposition, spoke with emotion upon reuniting with his family, sharing the harrowing experience of being separated from them for so long.
In an interview shortly after his release, Tikhanovsky reflected on the mental toll of his imprisonment, noting that the inability to express himself was the most challenging aspect of his confinement.
