In brief
In a recent incident highlighting ongoing wildlife trafficking concerns, Indian customs officials apprehended a Canadian man at Delhi airport for carrying a baby crocodile skull in his luggage. The 32-year-old was preparing to board a flight to Canada when he was stopped during a routine security check.
Upon examination, customs officials discovered the skull, weighing approximately 777 grams and wrapped in cream-colored cloth. An analysis by the Department of Forests and Wildlife confirmed that it belonged to an endangered species protected under India’s Wildlife Protection Act. The distinctive features of the skull, including the texture and tooth pattern, validated it as a baby crocodile's.According to authorities, the man allegedly purchased the skull while in Thailand and did not possess the required permits to transport wildlife items. He maintained that he had not hunted or killed the crocodile himself. The case against him is currently being pursued, and further scientific tests are being conducted to identify the specific sub-species of crocodile involved. This incident reflects a persistent issue in wildlife trafficking, with past cases including a Canadian woman caught in a similar situation last year for attempting to carry animal horns as souvenirs. As investigations continue, the plight of endangered species remains a pressing concern for environmental and wildlife protection agencies in India.
